Mix 2. Clay/Acid Meadows
This is a more authentic seed mix being made up of species to be found in old meadows, so this is first choice for a meadow, of any size, ideal for a few square yards in the garden or one of several acres. Suitable soils include clay, gravels or barns or where there is seasonal water-logging. If the area is in the garden, the 4 species grass mix I (amenity meadows/ field margins) will be suitable, otherwise use grass mix II, which has a wider range of grasses with higher feed value, suitable for livestock such as horses or sheep.

Note that yellow rattle is included in this seed mix, which suppresses grass growth if it is allowed to flower and to set seed. This means taking a hay cut in late July.

This mix is comparable to MG5 (Mesotrophic or neutral grassland) of the National Vegetation Classification (NVC), and is based on the typical grazed hay-meadow of lowland Britain.
